Cleanse Your Career Karma: Pt. 5

The last step to cleansing your career karma is probably the most important, experience. The experience that you gain in life is a direct consequence of your actions. Most books that you read will agree that you learn from experience, but unfortunately, they don’t always remind you that it is the negative experiences that we tend to learn from. So, with that in mind, you should always weigh your pros and cons based on past experiences because once completed, an action cannot be undone. Life is a constant series of decisions and acts that build upon one another. So, in order for your career karma to become and remain clean, you must consider that your words and your actions cannot be undone. Your actions must always move you closer to your goals.

Cleanse Your Career Karma: Pt 4

So far, you have identified the old habits that were preventing you from career satisfaction and you should have also discovered what actions you need to put into place to begin cleansing your career karma, so you can begin to reap.

You’ve heard the saying, “you reap what you sow”, well that is what this principle is all about. You need to ensure that the actions that you decide to put into place have positive outcomes. I’m a firm believer in, it’s not the choices that you make that decide your fate, but your reaction to the consequences of those choices. For example, You may have identified that you need to attend school to further your quest for success, so you select a school and attend classes. Now, you’ve completed the education required for your new profession, the next logical step is to begin your job search in your desired field. However, that doesn’t always happen. I’ve seen this time and time again. People functioning in jobs that they hate, with a master’s degree in a totally different field. We complete the educational requirement, but fear prevents us from moving forward. I mention this to say, that it is not enough to make the decision to change. Every decision that you make going forward must be conducive to getting you closer to your goal. If at any time, you evaluate your current status and decide that you are not moving forward, then you have not reacted appropriately to the consequences of your choices. Remember, you can only reap if you are actively sowing.

Cleanse Your Career Karma: Pt. 3

Hopefully, you have mastered the first law of Career Karma, which is replacing old habits with ones that will put you on the path to generating the results that you want. Now, it’s time to put your best foot forward and put those good plans into action, which brings us to the second law, Inducement.

Inducement, in layman terms, is the state of motivating or persuading one into action. The second law of Career Karma states that there can be no results without action. So, in essence, just because you wrote down what you want, won’t make those things mysteriously become true. You now have to become the change that you want to see in your life and that starts with setting up a plan of action. Ideally, this step involves you attending those networking sessions that you added to your planner, or enrolling and attending the classes that will improve your skill. Whatever those actions are, they not only need to be identified but you must be induced to turning them into reality. I’ve read that it takes 21 days to form a habit, so the inducement stage my take some time in order for you truly to replace those old fruitless habits. Once you have completed this stage, you will be ready for the third law of Career Karma, Reaping.

Cleanse Your Career Karma: Pt. 2

There is an old saying that goes something like, “if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you will keep getting what you’ve always got”. The thing is, once you’ve done a thing repetitively, whether it’s negative or positive, it will become a habit. Forming new habits is the first law of cleansing your career karma.

Habit, as defined by Dictionary.com, is “an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary.” So, the first step in cleansing your career karma is to identify those negative patterns or (habits) and replace them with positive ones. Easier said than done, I know, but it is a process that you must not skip, so here are some tips.

Results of a 2010 survey, suggest that more than 45% of employees are not satisfied with their jobs. This can be due to a number of reasons, lack of growth opportunities, pay, or just sheer dislike of the job itself. So, it is more than likely that you will fall into this category. If you are currently unemployed, then it is reasonable to believe that you are dissatisfied with your current position. So, if that is the case, you need to explore the reasons behind your dissatisfaction. If it is one of the reasons listed, such as lack of interest, then you need to discover what negative habits you have formed as a result of your situation. For example, you dislike your job, but rather than actively seek a more suitable career fit, you’ve developed the habit of poor attendance or even worse mediocre performance. This needs to change. Now that you know your negative habit, you need to put measures in place to change your lot in life. This can be anything from identifying things that you do like and making it a habit to incorporate those activities into your daily work life, or decide on a new career path and then list the activities that are required to get you the position you truly desire.

Once you have your list of new activities in place, you will be ready to conquer the second law of career karma, which is Inducement.

Take some time to honestly reflect on your current habits and those new habits that you want to achieve. We will cover the law of inducement in tomorrow’s post.
